Lithuanian and Polish Presidents discussed topical bilateral and international issues

2008.03.19

Wednesday, March 19, Vilnius – President of the Republic of Lithuania Valdas Adamkus had a telephone conversation with the President of the Republic of Poland Lech Kaczyński.

They discussed the recent European Council meeting, which, among other things, covered the likely situation in Lithuania‘s energy sector after 2009. President Adamkus said Lithuania's goal was to draw attention to the problem of isolated energy markets – and Lithuania is one of them – in the European Union, and to its possible solutions. Adamkus also stressed that European Council conclusions recognised the importance of energy bridges, including electricity interconnections with Poland and Sweden.

President Kaczyński reassured his readiness to continue efforts to speed up the construction of electricity bridge with Poland.

He briefed President Adamkus on the results of his meetings with heads of Ukraine, Georgia and Azerbaijan who had recently visited Poland, and stressed the importance of the Sarmatia consortium in the Odessa-Brody-Gdansk pipeline project.

President Adamkus conveyed Lithuania’s strong support for NATO enlargement, open-door policy and the extension of NATO Membership Action Plans to Georgia and Ukraine. “The Alliance must adequately respond to Georgia‘s and Ukraine‘s expectations and seek for a greater proximity with these countries. NATO Membership Action Plan is a perfect instrument facilitating the consolidation of reforms and membership aspirations but it does not automatically guarantee membership”, said President Adamkus.

The Polish President highlighted the situation concerning the ratification of the Lisbon Treaty in Poland. President Adamkus informed President Kaczyński that deliberation on the ratification of the Lisbon Treaty by the Seimas is due in April. “This Treaty is very important both for Lithuania and the region and for the whole Europe. I hope it will be ratified not only in Lithuania but in Poland and other countries too, as it will enable the European Union to enhance its competitiveness, efficiency and visibility in the world”, said President Adamkus.

The two Presidents also discussed the post-election situation in Russia and EU-Russian relations and agreed to meet in the near future.
